Tin Box Sizes Guide: Choosing Shape and Capacity

Getting the size and shape of a tin right is where good packaging is won or lost. A box that is a few millimetres too large wastes material and shipping volume; one that is too tight makes the product hard to pack and remove. This guide covers how to choose tin box sizes and shapes - round versus square versus rectangular - with real considerations for capacity, footprint, stacking and common dimensions.
Start with the product, not the box
The most reliable way to size a tin is to work outward from what goes inside it. Note the fill volume you need, the shape of the contents (loose, stacked, wrapped, or a single item), and whether an inner liner or bag will be added. A tin should hold the product comfortably with a little headroom, not squeeze it. Oversizing looks generous but wastes metal and freight on every unit; undersizing causes packing problems on the line. Fixing the internal capacity first keeps the rest of the decision grounded.
Round, square or rectangular?
Shape is not only an aesthetic choice - it changes capacity, shelf efficiency and cost.
Round tins
Round bodies are the most economical to form and the kindest to loose contents, which flow and pour without catching in corners. They convey a classic, traditional feel.
- Strengths: lowest forming cost, ideal for pouring, timeless look.
- Tradeoff: circles leave gaps between units on a shelf, so they use display space less efficiently.
- Best for: tea, coffee, biscuits, sweets and gift caddies.

Square tins
Square bodies use shelf and shipping space efficiently because they tessellate with almost no gaps, and they present four flat faces for branding.

- Best for: tea, coffee, gift sets and premium confectionery.
For brands that want maximum facing on shelf, square tin boxes make every centimetre of display work harder.
Rectangular tins
Rectangular formats suit elongated or layered contents - bars, wrapped items, or products arranged in rows - and they stack neatly.
- Strengths: great for long or arranged contents, efficient stacking, generous branding panel.
- Tradeoff: less suited to pouring loose product.
- Best for: chocolate bars, biscuits, pens and stationery, and multi-piece gift assortments.
When contents are long or laid out in rows, rectangular tin boxes use the space more sensibly than a round tin of similar volume.
Capacity versus footprint
Two tins can hold the same volume with very different footprints. A short, wide tin has a large base and low height; a tall, narrow tin has a small base and more height. This matters for two reasons. On shelf, footprint decides how many facings you get in a given space. In transport, the base area and height together decide how efficiently boxes fill a carton and a pallet. If retail facings are the priority, favour a smaller footprint and more height; if the product must be poured or scooped, a wider base is easier to use.
Stackability
If your tins will be stacked - in store, in the home, or in the carton - a few features help. Recessed or shouldered lids let one tin nest slightly onto the next so stacks stay put. Flat, parallel tops and bases stack more securely than domed lids. Square and rectangular tins stack more stably than round ones simply because their footprints align. If stacking is important to the product's use or display, mention it early so the lid and profile support it.
Size, shape and shipping cost
Because tins are rigid and often shipped internationally, freight is usually charged on volume, not just weight. That makes shape and size a real cost lever. Square and rectangular tins pack into a carton with little wasted space, so more units travel in the same volume; round tins leave voids between them, which means shipping some empty air on every pallet. The difference is modest per unit but adds up across a large export order. If landed cost is a priority and the product does not need to be poured, a square or rectangular format can quietly improve the economics of every shipment - a point worth weighing alongside the look you want.
Height matters too. A slightly shorter, wider tin and a taller, narrower one may hold the same volume, but they nest differently into standard carton and pallet dimensions. Choosing a size that divides neatly into your outer carton avoids wasted space inside the box. It is worth confirming the outer-carton and pallet configuration alongside the tin size, so the whole pack travels efficiently rather than optimising the tin in isolation.
How size affects tooling and quantity
Size and shape also touch cost at the tooling stage. A larger tin uses more metal per unit, and an unusual profile may need dedicated forming tools, whereas a size close to an established format can share tooling and keep setup costs down. This does not mean you must accept a stock size - bespoke sizing is routine - but if budget is tight, it is worth asking whether a small adjustment to your dimensions lets the project use existing tooling. Custom decorative runs are typically produced in the region of several thousand to tens of thousands of pieces per design, so the tooling cost is spread across the run; the larger the order, the smaller its share in each unit.
Common dimensions to anchor your thinking
It helps to have rough reference points, though exact sizes are made to your product:
- Small pocket/mint tins: roughly 60-95 mm across, low profile.
- Standard tea or coffee caddies: roughly 90-110 mm across and 100-140 mm tall, often around 100-250 g of loose product.
- Biscuit and gift tins: roughly 150-250 mm across, from shallow to deep.
- Large hamper or sharing tins: 250 mm and up, chosen for presence as much as capacity.
