Tin or cardboard: which should your product be in?
We make tins, so start with the part that is not in our interest to tell you: for a great many products a printed cardboard box is the right answer, and if your run is short, your product is light and dry, and the pack is opened once and recycled, board will almost certainly cost you less and get to market faster. A tin earns its place when the pack has to survive a long journey, sit on a shelf for months, be opened repeatedly, or be kept afterwards — because a tin that is kept keeps advertising, and a box that is flattened does not. The table below sets both out honestly, including the four lines where cardboard wins outright.

When cardboard is the better answer
Use board when the run is short, when the design is still moving, or when the pack is opened once and thrown away — which is most packaging, and rightly so. Use it when the product is light and dry and the journey is short, because then you are paying a tin's weight in freight for protection nobody needed. Use it for a launch you are still testing, because a few hundred printed boxes tell you whether the idea works before anyone commits to a five-thousand-piece minimum. And use it when the artwork will change again in three months, because revising a box is a small decision and revising a tin's tooling is not. If you recognise your project in that paragraph, do not buy a tin. It will not make the product sell better and it will tie up money you should be spending elsewhere.
When a tin pays for itself
The case for a tin is not that it protects better in the abstract — it is that certain products lose money without it. Anything fragile crossing a border in a stacked carton. Anything sold in a hot or humid market where board softens on the shelf. Anything opened repeatedly over weeks rather than once, where a box gets tired and a tin does not. Anything sold as a gift, where the container is part of what is being given. And anything with a long shelf life, where months under retail lighting are exactly the conditions board handles least well. There is also the part that never appears on a quotation: a tin is kept. It sits on a counter or in a cupboard, with your name on it, for years after the product inside is gone. No cardboard box does that, and no media budget buys it as cheaply.
The answer is often both
Plenty of ranges use both and are right to: a board carton for the everyday line and a tin for the gift edition, the seasonal release or the export market. The same artwork can carry across, and the tin becomes the top of the range rather than the whole of it. This is usually the most economical way to get a tin into a business for the first time — one edition, one size, the smallest sensible minimum — and it also answers the question honestly, because you find out what your own customers do with it rather than taking anyone's word for it, ours included.
Questions buyers ask
Is a tin box more expensive than a cardboard box?
Per unit, yes, in almost every case — you are buying steel, forming it and printing on metal, and the minimum order is higher. The comparison changes when you count what happens after the quotation: damage in transit, a pack that fails in a humid market, product returned because the box arrived crushed, and the fact that a tin is kept and a box is not. For a short run of a light, dry product going a short distance, cardboard is cheaper on every measure that matters. For a fragile or premium product crossing a border, the arithmetic often reverses.
Which is better for the environment, tin or cardboard?
Both are among the best-recovered packaging materials in Europe and neither is a clear loser. Steel is separated magnetically from mixed waste, so it is recovered regardless of what is printed on it — 80.5% of steel packaging placed on the EU market in 2022 was really recycled under the harmonised EU calculation. Plain board also recycles at a high rate. The real distinction is not tin against board: it is that laminated, foiled and heavily coated board is much harder to recycle than plain board, and that a tin which is kept and reused for years has not entered any waste stream at all yet.
Can I order a small quantity of tins to test the market?
Not as small as with board, and we would rather say so than take an order that does not make sense. Custom-printed tins start at 5,000 pieces per design for larger sizes. If you need a few hundred units to test an idea, print a board carton for the test and come to us when the idea is proven — or, if the tin itself is the idea, ask about a stock shape with your artwork, which removes tooling from the equation and gets you to the lowest workable quantity.
Do tins protect food better than cardboard?
Against light, crushing, damp and pests, clearly yes — a tin is opaque, rigid and does not soften. Against oxygen, no: a tin lid is a physical closure and not a hermetic seal, so a coated barrier board pouch or laminate can outperform a bare tin on gas barrier. For products where oxygen is the enemy the right answer is a sealed inner bag inside the tin, which gives you the barrier and the protection and the reuse together.
